1. Which primer do I use before powder coating?
To achieve good adhesion and corrosion resistance, primer is applied to the powder coating. The selection of primer before powder coating application depends entirely on the substrate (metal, plastic, wood, etc.) and the surrounding environment on which the primer is applied. Usually, five types of primers can be used before powder coating — etch primer, zinc-rich primer, and polyester primer are suitable for metal substrates, while epoxy primer and acrylic primers are ideal for metal, wood, and plastic substrates.
2. What problems could happen when powder coating raw steel with clear powder, and what should I do to prepare for it? Also, which type of powder coat is best for getting a matte or flat clear finish?
If not correctly prepared, powder coating raw steel with clear powder may lead to rust or corrosion. To avoid this, ensure the steel is clean and free from rust or oil before applying the clear powder. Typically, epoxy powder coating offers both corrosion and chemical resistance. Additionally, it's a cost-effective option.
3. Can polished/machined aluminum be effectively protected by clear powder coating, or will it start yellowing quickly, especially with colorful clear vision?
Yes, polished/machined aluminum can be effectively protected by powder coating. Especially with a prismatic clear vision, it might look strange or eventually turn yellow. It's better to test a small area first to assess its appearance and durability before applying it to the entire surface.
4. How do I get a perfectly smooth, flat finish?
To make your surface smooth and flat, start by cleaning it properly. Use high-quality materials and proper application techniques, such as spraying evenly and consistently. Sanding between coats can also help achieve a smoother finish.
5. Is epoxy a suitable primer for repairing damage on aluminum wheels before applying a powder coating, or is spot aluminum welding necessary for effective repair?
When deciding between epoxy primer and spot aluminum welding, consider how serious the damage is, along with the cost and time. Epoxy primer works well for minor issues like tiny scratches or small holes. But if you've got major problems or structural issues, spot aluminum welding is a better choice because it's stronger. Using an epoxy primer is cheaper for fixing wheels, but if you go for aluminum spot welding, it costs more because it needs special tools and skills.
6. Can I powder coat items and keep them in an enclosed oven overnight, and then start the oven the next day and allow them to cure? What will happen?
Storing powder-coated items in the oven overnight before curing them the next day can cause problems. If the oven isn't clean, dirt could stick to the coating and mess it up. Moisture in the oven might get into the coating and cause bubbles or blisters when cured. If you turn on the oven too quickly without giving the items time to warm up first, the sudden change in temperature could make the coating crack or peel off.
7. Will powder coating in my auto shop be negatively affected by exposure to oil changes or brake cleaning?
Yes, powder coating in your auto shop could be harmed if exposed to oil changes or brake cleaning activities near the coating. Oil changing and brake cleaning involve various chemicals that may react with powder coating, leading to adhesion issues and decreased durability and color quality.
8. How do I stop getting orange peel on my rims when powder coating them for the first time, even after cleaning and blasting them properly?
Take the following steps to stop the orange peel on your rims during the powder coating application.
